Across London, various initiatives are underway that connect people, place and art as part of the longer-term redevelopment of areas, helping to humanise their current and future experiences. This year Open House London is highlighting some of these approaches, showing how new forms of more local engagement are inspiring the capital’s places, including at 20 Dalston Lane, Greenwich Peninsula and Peckham Space.
Art in the Open
Art in the Open is London’s independent advisor for art in the public
realm, developed by Open House as part of our commitment to London’s
public places.
Art in the Open works strategically to influence policy, raise debate and inform how London’s opportunities develop. It champions the contribution that artists, working with others, can make to an experience of place for Londoners and the city’s visitors. Current research is focused on themes of common interest such as light, commemoration/celebration, and urban change.
A dedicated Art in the Open web resource has now been launched, with advice and guidance for those interested in commissioning or making work for the public realm in London.
Elliot Lipton, Managing Director, First Base Ltd, Chair of Art in the Open Advisory Board:
“Good public space has the ability to transform
new developments by influencing how we relate to our homes, surrounding
communities and the city. It is just as important as the design of
the buildings themselves and we need to ensure that we support its
quality and experience. Art in the Open, as part of Open House, plays
a fundamental role for London in the development of exceptional public
spaces by encouraging greater collaboration between the built environment
and the visual arts sectors including clients, commissioners, artists
and architects.”
