Improving the quality of London’s public realm is one of Open House’s core themes. As part of this commitment Art in the Open was launched in 2007 as London’s advice and advocacy body for art in the public realm. It helps stakeholders ask how artists working with others can be part of making successful places. A dedicated Art in the Open website with advice and guidance for London will launch in late autumn 2008.
This year to highlight the different ways artists have worked with architects, Open House London is profiling interesting temporary and permanent commissions. This includes a talk on colour and collaboration by artist Antoni Malinowski and architect Steve Tompkins; a curators’ tour of the Portavillion commissions in two of London’s parks; and buildings such as the Home Office HQ and Sunshine House.
The publication, Open space: art in the public realm 1995 - 2005 is also available with exemplary case studies celebrating the role of art in London's built environment. Produced by Arts Council England, London in partnership with Central London Partnership. For further details and to order a copy please click here
